Strength training is one of the most important forms of exercise for older adults. It offers a wide range of benefits—from maintaining and building muscle to helping prevent bone loss. Resistance work also improves balance, coordination, and overall mobility, which can significantly reduce the risk of falls and injuries. In addition, it supports joint health, boosts metabolism, and enhances quality of life and independence as we age.
But what if holding onto traditional dumbbells isn’t easy—or safe? For those with gripping difficulties, shaky hands, arthritis, Parkinson’s disease, or recovering from injury, traditional weights may feel awkward or even impossible to use.
The good news is, there are several excellent alternatives that allow older adults to safely and effectively do strength work—without needing a firm grip. Let’s take a look at four safe and accessible options.

1. Dumbbells with Hand Straps
These innovative weights are similar to traditional dumbbells, but with a major upgrade: straps that wrap securely around the hand. This simple addition makes them much easier to hold, especially for those with limited hand strength or dexterity. The straps do the work of keeping the weight in place, so you can focus on performing the movement correctly and safely.
Best for: Individuals with weak grip, arthritis, or limited hand mobility who still want the feel of traditional weights.

This is another one to consider, with adjustable straps.

2. Resistance Tubes with Handles
Resistance tubes offer a versatile and joint-friendly way to build strength. Many styles come with padded handles that are easier to hold than small metal dumbbells. Plus, resistance tubes allow you to perform a wide range of seated or standing exercises at your own pace. They come in various resistance levels, so you can choose one that fits your current strength and progress as you improve.
I have used them in my senior fitness classes for years. It’s a safe and versatile option for a good strength workout. Plus, it’s perfect to pack for traveling.
Best for: Those looking for a lightweight, portable option that is gentle on the joints and customizable to fitness level.

3. Wrist Weights that Velcro Around the Wrist
These weights wrap snugly around your wrists and fasten with Velcro, eliminating the need to hold anything at all. They’re ideal for movements where hands need to stay free, and they allow you to add resistance to arm and shoulder exercises with ease. Because they’re worn rather than held, wrist weights can be especially helpful for individuals with hand tremors or limited grip control.
Best for: Anyone who cannot grip objects comfortably or safely, or prefers a hands-free resistance option.

4. Non-Slip Ergonomic Hand Weights
Designed with comfort and safety in mind, ergonomic hand weights are made with soft, grippy materials and shaped to fit more naturally in the hand. They may feature indentations or curves that support better hand positioning. Many are coated with neoprene or similar materials to help prevent slipping, even if hands get sweaty or shaky.
Best for: Those with mild grip issues who prefer to hold a weight but need something easier to manage than traditional dumbbells.

Strength training doesn’t have to stop because of hand challenges. With the right tools, it’s possible to enjoy the benefits of resistance exercise safely and confidently. Whether you’re training at home or in a class, these dumbbell alternatives are smart options for continuing your strength journey while protecting your hands and joints.
