If you’re on a weight loss journey — as I still am, for life — it’s tempting to just look at pounds on the scale as a measurement of progress. But in reality, we should be looking at other metrics, too. (More on that to come, in another story I’m working on).
When we say we want to lose weight, really we are hoping to lose body fat. In the health and fitness world, we refer to “body composition” – the amount of fat vs. muscle in your body, expressed in percentages. Therefore, body fat percentage is an important number to track.
In the past, I’ve used a hand-held electronic body fat monitor to provide this reading. And there’s always the old-school method, albeit unreliable, of using special calipers to “pinch” and measure a fold of fat (um…no thanks).
Thankfully, we now have better options to do this, in the form of smart scales. Before getting this new scale, I was still using a large, old-fashioned spring type scale. However, I haven’t had luck with spring or digital scales in the past. I’d step on them five times and get five different readings. So frustrating. But today’s smart scales have come a long way from those earlier types.
So when the Inevifit company invited me to review their Eros Smart Body Fat Scale, I was eager to see how it would work for me. So far it’s great, and I’m loving the features.
Smart scales work with an app on your phone so you are able to track your measurements automatically without having to write it down or enter manually.
The Eros scale automatically measures and tracks the following:
- Body weight
- Body fat percentage
- Body mass index (BMI)
- Fat-free body weight
- Subcutaneous fat
- Visceral fat
- Body water
- Skeletal muscle
- Muscle mass
- Bone mass
- Protein
- Basal metabolic rate (BMR) – an estimate of the calories needed to perform your body’s most basic (basal) functions, like breathing, circulation, and cell production.
- Metabolic age
All this, just by stepping on the scale. There are metal sensors on the scale that come in contact with your skin; you must use the scale barefoot to get the measurements other than just the body weight. The scale uses bio-electrical impedance analysis (BIA) technology to estimate body composition values.
The scale is attractive with a smooth glass platform, and comes in your choice of black or white. I chose the black.
I’ve been using it for a few weeks now and it’s been working great. I don’t get multiple differing pound measurements like my old scale; so far it’s been consistent with results. And I’m loving all the data I get with the Eros scale. I just open the app, step on the scale, and the data is sent to the phone app where it’s automatically tracked and graphed so I can see the changes over time. It works by connecting to your phone via Bluetooth, and the app is free.
Others in your household can use it too. They can download the free app on their phone and everyone can use the same scale.
So if like me, you were using an old-fashioned scale, consider upgrading to the latest technology. It just makes things much easier and it’s far more informative.
