Homemade trail mix is easy DIY gift, healthy snack

December 18, 2016 By Michelle Rogers

Homemade trail mix how-to

Here’s a simple idea for a yummy, healthy snack you can make for yourself or give as a gift: DIY trail mix!

Along with homemade peanut butter cups and other goodies, this Christmas I decided to put together my own trail mix blend to give as well.

Trail mix, unlike a baked good or candy, is so simple that there really is no way to screw it up. There’s also no right or wrong when it comes to ingredients — use any combination of unshelled nuts and dried fruit that you like. You can also add in some chocolate for sweetness if desired, such as chocolate chips or M&Ms.

For this batch, I included one package of each: dried cherries, golden raisins, regular raisins, roasted whole cashews, roasted almonds, roasted peanuts and milk chocolate chips.

I got the nuts from Trader Joe’s. They have a big selection, great prices and also offer several nuts in a “50% less salt” version, which I prefer. Regular salted and unsalted are also available for most of their nuts as well. I also like Trader Joe’s because their nuts don’t contain MSG.

Place ingredients in a large mixing bowl or bag, and use a big spoon or your hands to combine.

For gifts, I filled a mason jar or candy bag with trail mix, and added a sparkly fabric ribbon. Easy peasy!
