What’s cooking this week

In the paper

Something really exciting happened for me this past week — I was in the newspaper!

The Burlington Times-News has a food section on Wednesdays, and they have a Cook of the Month feature…and I’m it for March. Yay!

A reporter and photographer came to my house, where they shot photos and video of me cooking. Then they interviewed me about my weight loss journey, family and blog. I was also asked to share a few recipes in the paper.

This was a great opportunity to provide some encouragement, I hoped, to others like me who have struggled with yo-yo dieting and exercise. I was able to talk about my healthy eating philosophy and how I’d rather eat smaller portions of food I love than to give things up; and about how I finally found success this time around by starting with small changes I could stick to.

You can check out the article online here and the video here. I’m truly grateful for this opportunity to spread a positive message about resilience and healthy living.

Good Friday in Old Salem

On Friday, my son and I had most of the day together so we took advantage of that and went somewhere I’d been wanting to visit for while — Old Salem, a living history museum and colonial village in Winston-Salem. We really enjoyed it, learned a lot, and I got some beautiful photographs. Please see my story and photo gallery here.

NEW post on the blog: Step back in time to the 1700s at Old Salem, a living history museum and village in North Carolina! We had the pleasure of visiting on Good Friday. Here, a re-enactor is using natural materials to dye and etch Easter eggs the way they used to.

Scoping the Easter prep

On Saturday, I needed to prepare for Easter and make my traditional chocolate peanut butter eggs and chocolate peanut butter cups for the family, so I thought I’d try doing that as a live Periscope broadcast, using a tripod with a phone holder attachment. I then repurposed that video by uploading it to YouTube, and embedded it in my existing posts of those two recipes. If you’re on Periscope, let’s connect! I’m at https://www.periscope.tv/MRhealthyliving.

On a related note, I found something ideal for doing Periscope or any other videography and photography with your smartphone — an adapter that holds your phone on a tripod.  The one I got from Amazon was recommended to me by a professional, and I’m SO happy I ordered it. This model holds the phone in either landscape or portrait orientation, a feature that not all of the other adapters have. It works great.

Video from the live Periscope broadcast:

How was your Easter? Did you do anything special for the long weekend? Please share in the comments!
