Q: Hi Michelle! As the person I know who knows the most about beauty…do you have a pick for the best drugstore brand of concealer for redness and for covering the occasional pimple? – Rachel B., Maryland
A: Hi Rachel! My favorite blemish and redness concealer is Bare Minerals original powder foundation. I actually don’t love this product as a foundation, because I find that Bare Minerals accentuates pores and lines. But it is hands-down the best spot concealer I’ve ever used. It is highly pigmented and stays on. It’s perfect for spots and only requires a tiny bit on your brush.
I apply a small amount with a clean Ecotools eyeshadow brush on spots after I’ve applied my regular creamy foundation. Then I finish my face by brushing lightly with my usual face powder, using a large brush.
If I have a blemish that is any way oozing (sorry to be gross!) such as when I’ve just gotten out of the shower, I wait until it is completely dry/scabbed until I apply any makeup on it because otherwise it will become infected and just get worse. So in that case I do my makeup and avoid getting anything on that spot. Then, by the time I get to work it’s usually healed enough where I can apply Bare Minerals on the spot.
If it’s a stubborn one that just isn’t healing quickly, honestly it’s best to not cover it up with anything. Give it a day or so to heal before concealing with makeup. On those days I try to emphasize my eye makeup and hairstyle more, to draw attention away from the sore.
I don’t use Bare Minerals under my eyes. For that I currently use the Cover Girl + Olay concealer stick. I gently dot it under my eyes, then smooth with a makeup sponge wedge; after applying liquid foundation but before powder.
