Review: WEN Six Thirteen Cleansing Treatment

September 29, 2012 By Michelle Rogers

I recently wrote a review of WEN Cleansing Conditioner, which I used exclusively for three years, rating it four out of five hearts on my love-it scale. I described how with WEN my hair isn’t perfectly silky and frizz-free but it is soft and a drastic improvement over what it is with any other product I’ve tried.

So when WEN came out with a new cleansing conditioner called Six Thirteen, I was quite anxious to try it and see how it compares. My impression was that Six Thirteen is kind of a step up from regular WEN, with even more conditioning. When my Sweet Almond Mint ran out this time, I decided to order Six Thirteen instead.

The claims

From the QVC website:

“What is it: Using an innovative and modern approach to hair care that he began in 1993, Chaz Dean has infused his Six Thirteen Daily Cleansing Treatment with a blend of 11 amino acids to help restore strength and elasticity to hair. The unique combination of more than 25 natural oils and extracts helps to nourish your hair and scalp, making Six Thirteen perfect for those with sensitive skin. Full of luxurious ingredients, Six Thirteen is the indulgence your hair has been waiting for.

Who is it for: Six Thirteen is designed for all hair types and can be used on people of all ages.

Why is it different: Six Thirteen is ideal for cleansing and hydrating the scalp and hair.

How do I use it: Rinse your hair thoroughly and completely with cool water. Apply enough Daily Cleansing Treatment to thoroughly coat your hair from scalp to ends. Make sure you are using enough to saturate the hair and scalp.

For short hair, use a minimum of six to eight pumps. For medium-length hair, use a minimum of eight to 10 pumps. For long hair, use a minimum of 10 to 12 pumps. For really long hair, use a minimum of 12 to 14 pumps.

Add a splash of water–this is very important to help evenly distribute the Daily Cleansing Treatment through your hair. Comb through with a wide-tooth comb and clip up hair for the remainder of the shower. To ensure maximum cleansing and conditioning, Chaz recommends that you cleanse, rinse, and repeat, using half the pumps for the first cleanse and the remaining pumps for the second cleanse. The longer you leave it on, the better. Rinse thoroughly with cool water and apply a dime-sized amount to soaking-wet hair from mid-shaft to ends as a leave-in conditioner.”

My experience

I have thick, wavy, color treated hair that frizzes easily and can be hard to manage. WEN Cleansing Conditioner was the best product line I’d tried thus far, but, it was about 80% of where I would like it to be in terms of conditioning. My wish for Six Thirteen was that it would be kind of a Super WEN, taking me closer to 100% — and indeed it does. This is the WEN I’ve been needing all along!

Six Thirteen is thicker and more concentrated than regular WEN, and provides a greater level of conditioning. Plus, it smells wonderful — better than most of the other WEN varieties. It’s a very pleasant scent without being overpowering. That’s important to me, as I have allergies and am sensitive to products with a lot of perfume.

A few tips I’d offer are use a wide-tooth comb after applying, as the directions suggest; it really does make a difference. And be sure to rinse your hair thoroughly to ensure that all product is out of your hair, to avoid greasiness. If you decide you want some as a leave-in, I suggest using a very small amount and only on your ends. Also, since this product is very thick I don’t bother with the pump; I just unscrew the cap and squeeze out.

I wash every other day, and blow dry with a round brush and paddle brush to smooth it out. I love how my hair is with Six Thirteen; it’s soft and feels incredible.

The only down side for me is the cost, and the fact that it’s only available online. This is the priciest hair product I’ve ever used. But I can honestly say that in my experience it lives up to the claims, so you do get what you pay for. It is conveniently available from Amazon.com.

To summarize, it works and I love it!

The bottom line

PROS:

  • Lives up to its claims
  • Natural ingredients; no harsh detergents
  • Product is 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner

CONS:

  • Pricier than other shampoos/conditioners
  • Not available in stores
