This month I attended the BlogHer ’12 conference in New York City, where Katie Couric was a featured keynote speaker.
When she walked on stage, she absolutely blew the audience away. She looked incredible!
Couric, 55, has always been beautiful, but this day she really had a special glow about her. In a stylish sleeveless black dress that showed off newly-toned arms, she looked healthier and better than ever.
Naturally everyone wanted to know her secret, and how she got her “guns.”
“People think I’m pumping iron two hours a day!” she said. But Couric revealed that for the past six months she’s been taking spinning classes, and credits that for her new physique.
“I just want to say, [spinning is] a very efficient workout,” said Couric. “In spinning…it’s not one of those things you can say, ‘I’m tired, I want to stop’, ’cause that’s the way I am for pretty much all forms of exercise, but it’s 45 minutes, you get it done, and they actually do some arm stuff while you’re spinning….It’s just a great form of exercise.”

Spinning — stationary cycling on a special bike — is known for building leg strength, sure, but arms? What’s up with that?
“Basically what we say [in spinning] is that you should be using mainly your core and legs; the arms are not really involved,” says Jennifer Nestor, an instructor at the West Chester Area YMCA in Pa. But she notes that morph classes combining things are catching on as a new trend. “More and more of them are popping up.”
Couric takes a class at Flywheel, which according to their website offers “an experience that…includes climbs and descents, while working arms with weighted bars.”
So that explains the guns, but is she also dieting?
Couric said she’s doing Weight Watchers “kinda sorta,” and isn’t a fan of strict diets.
“I start every day on Weight Watchers and end every day off Weight Watchers,” she laughed, but added, “the good thing about that program is it does make you mindful of what you’re eating and the portion size.”
“I think dieting is making people fat,” said Couric. “We’re so hard on ourselves. Let’s say we eat a chocolate chip cookie, we think ‘we blew it today, I’m going to have 12 chocolate chip cookies’. I think that kind of attitude is really destructive. So I think with Weight Watchers, it just has helped me be smarter about [it]. If I fall off the wagon, I don’t eat everything that’s not nailed down.”
Well, all I can say is she looks great and I wholeheartedly agree with her philosophy of regular exercise and no-diet sensible eating. To borrow a line from When Harry Met Sally, I’ll have what she’s having!
